AGAIN, SEPTA GAS, HOST COMMUNITIES CLASH IN AKWA IBOM STATE

By Assam Abia
Worried by the non-payment of approved claims and compensation for the septa Energy Gas pipeline route which traverses Ikot Abasi local Government Area through Mkpat Enin, Onna,Eket and Esit Eket Local Government Area, youth of the affected host communities are poised for war with septa Energy Nigeria and the state ministry of lands if the said claims and compensation are not released to the  communities through their various consultants before the end of September, 2011.
The youths under the auspices of youths of affected Host communities in septa gas pipeline project in Eket Senatorial District vent their anger while reacting to a publication in a local tabloid in which one Barr. Ime Ndon of the Ministry of Lands and Town Planning was quoted as saying that the Ministry of Lands and Town Planning had paid the sum of six hundred and Eighty Million naira to the affected host communities in the five Local Government Areas.
Speaking to newsmen, the chairman of the youth group, Obong Oku Edoho described the said publication as false, misleading and an imagination of the said staff of the Ministry.
Obong Edoho recalled that since the Ministry hurriedly convened a meeting to publish the schedule of payment in July, 2011, it had only unilaterally paid what it termed community interest to the communities without taking care of individual claims and compensation.
The group wondered how Nine Hundred and Thirty Thousand Naira paid to each of the seventy one villages cleared by the Ministry could translate to six Hundred and Eighty Million Naira.
They claimed that they have been denied the right to use the large expanse of affected land for farming and other means of livelihood thereby causing them untold hardship, even as the second season planting had commenced.
They also wondered the foot-dragging in the payment of the claimed sum of money even though they are aware of the huge amount of money septa Energy paid to Government as compensation which was in billions naira.
The youth group therefore threatens to do everything humanly possible to make sure they get what rightly belongs to them.
Collaborating, the position of the youth, some traditional rulers who pleaded anonymity described the situation as an abuse of the patience and understanding of the affected host communities.
They lamented the stress and vigorous efforts they had put into restraining the youths, and called on the relevant authorities to act rightly before the matter gets out of hand.

SCAM OF WORM: AKISAN President Buffer Eyo To Face Expulsion

Written By
Eno Adam INN/ Hayward, CA

If and when Miami Chapter of Akwa Ibom Association of Nigeria (AKISAN) holds its general meeting on the first Saturday of next month, being October 1, 2011, which coincides with the 51st Anniversary of Nigeria’s independence day, the president of AKISAN Mr Buffa Eyo (an Akpabio boy) will know his fate as a member of the chapter and  whether to continue in office, be expelled or suspended.
Last Saturday, Mr. Eyo dodged the bullet at this month's general meeting of his chapter held at the home of the National PRO officer of the Association (Dr. Sonny  Abia) whose wife Inemesit Abia, MD, is Miami Chapter President. During the meeting there were lots of speeches, grievances and accusations leveled against Mr. Eyo during his one year in office. At the same time, they were not allowed to air their views whether by purpose or design or lack of time. Some issued were personal in nature with nothing to do with the association.

Since Mr. Eyo knows that he is a president by virtue of being a member of his Chapter and his Chapter holds the national secretariat with him as its representative, Mr. Buffer is putting all efforts to thwart his removal. He knows there is a mountain of wrongdoings against, including defrauding the association. For a small listing, please read below:-

o   taking credit for on-going medical missions that Nto Annang, ODU, Pro-Health, AIDN are equally taking credit in order to obtain money from AKISAN.
o   Claiming to have purchased medicine and medical supplies with $38,000 with no proof and collecting $20,000 already from the Board for it.
o   withdrawing/causing the sum of five thousand dollars ($5,000.00) to be withdrawn from association's account without due process to travel to Nigeria
o   using AKISAN’s funds to transport non-AKISAN members to Akwa Ibom
o   non-adherence to National Constitution or Chapter’s Charter in the daily operation of the National Executive office
o   running/converting AKISAN as or to his private estate by using its debit card for his private use
o   causing Aniekpeno Mkpanah (a non-member and visitor) to read the president's Citation at the Convention in place of the National Secretary Mr. Bassey Okon.
o   failure to deposit AKISAN’s funds collected at the convention within 48 hours as mandated by the National constitution
o   becoming a financial liability and otherwise for Miami Chapter as a representative and sponsored candidate from the chapter
o   showing disrespect for Miami Chapter Women during the last Convention – non-inclusion of their items including cultural dance in the program booklet and refusal to listen or amend it to accord them the proper place and recognition for a successful hosting of the convention
o   endorsing/media blitz of Gov. Akpabio for second term election as president of a non-profit cultural association in violation of the United States IRS rule
o   signing of an article written for him to support Gov. Akpabio for second term as president of a US non-profit organization
o   unconstitutional removal of Mr. Edet Udofia from Emergency Trust Fund (ETF) in the middle of his tenure and replaced with Mr. Peter Umoh. Mr. Udofia contested the last election with the president and lost by two votes.
o   Taking a unilateral decision to remove Mr. Bassey Okon, AKISAN Secretary without tabling the matter with the local chapter and showing no respect for the office
o   rebuking and accusing Mr. Okon in an executive meeting of lining up with “opposition” when Mr. Okon shook hands with, greeted and took pictures with Mr. Edet Udofia and Mr. Mike Essien (Legal Counsel) during October 16, 2011 First National Council Meeting.
o   Got $200,000 for security at the Convention from state government and has not reported/ accounted for it to the organization
o   Hired mercenaries to harass fellow Akwa Ibomites at the Convention
o   Was given N15,000,000 to split with three people and has not reported to the organization he represented
o   With another N75,000,000 in the till, sharing this one is causing a rift within the group

In the end two motions were raised last Saturday against Mr. Eyo: the first was/is to expel him from the chapter for his actions while the second, a counter motion was/is to suspend him from the local chapter. When it came time for vote and in order to save face and extend Mr. Eyo’s tenure to travel to Akwa Ibom for the State Birthday Celebration, Dr. Sonny Abia drove members of his chapter away from his home with the support of Mr. Ita Ntekim, the VP of the association. As of yesterday, the chapter president already has embarked upon calling some members to level with and soften their pedals against Mr. Eyo. Besides Mr. Buffer Eyo being roundly condemned by his chapter, some of the actions of the national president may lead to IRS having to revoke the status of the organization and steps must be taken to curb his excessiveness in the interest of the Association.

Appendage: It would be recalled that Gov Godswill Akpabio used  millions of Naira during the election period of last year in support of Bufa Eyo who will do his bidding all the time. This is the same thing that he goes around doing in order to place his candidate in all Akwa Ibom State Diaspora groups. One of the reasons for this is to pave way for  him to canvass for more awards and brew sycophants.

Nigeria's Qua Iboe Terminal Oil Spill: One too Many

 Written  by
Esema Joseph Esema

Taking cognizance of the adverse effects, it is pathetic to note that since May 1 2010 when the Exxon Mobil Qua Iboe Terminal (QIT) oil spill in Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria occurred, it has not been given much attention as the occasion required.

It is even more appalling that while our government appears from its indifferent response not to have noticed the effects of the spill, examples are being drawn from the region during the debates on the way out of the Gulf of Mexico spill in the United States. More enraging are the defiant statements that have been credited to the management of Exxon Mobil to the effect that the QIT oil spill is small when compared to any in the history of oil spill. This makes one wonder whether the small' spill has no disastrous impact on the environment.

Needless to say, the QIT oil spill has affected the aquatic state of the waters and has brought untold hardship to the fishermen settlements close to the terminal, whose major source of livelihood lied in the polluted water.
The Nigerian government could borrow a leaf from the response of the American government over the Gulf of Mexico oil spill, where the president's interest has gone beyond official to personal, the Congress has commenced intensive investigation and the management of BP Oil America has in addition to their several apologies, taken giant strides towards restoring the earlier state of the affected waters.

It is important to note that if the QIT spill is not addressed promptly, it would extend to other coastal areas with the attendant troubles. Again it would encourage the trend where oil giants skirt safety rules since virtually no sanctions are applied.

It is submitted that efforts at cleansing the affected areas should be expedited. Firstly, the source of the spill should be plugged, then dispersants could be used to break up the oil on the water, in addition, Exxon Mobil should be made to pay compensation that is commensurate with the impact of their actions on the environment and on the disrupted business activities of those living in that area.

The Harmful Waste (Special Criminal Provision etc) CAP H1 Laws of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 2004 could succinctly deal with the situation. However, the problem lies in the implementation as no specific agency has been established to prosecute crimes arising from the Act.

Considering the impact of these spills and the quick succession at which they have been occurring in recent times it might be necessary to evolve standards and regulations which the Ministry of Environment and other relevant agencies would apply in addressing oil spill cases when they arise.

Amakpe Refinery Issue: How Wicked are we?

The agency- Akwa Ibom Industrial Promotion Council (AKIIPOC) has got either professionally incompetent administrators or that those at the helm of affairs at that agency, are no Akwa Ibomites, who should be working for the interest of the State and the governor, may not be aware of the real operations of those manning that department in his administration. But isn't he supposed to be calling for periodic reports to see what his lieutenants and departments in his administration are doing?
The highlighted portion in green below, is not different from our experiences here in Ankara regarding Ostim project for our State. They came, they saw and disappeared and that was the end of the story. No word back. Is that how a government function works? The problem may also lie on business development skills which I find to be lacking among our people in AKS. There is a big vacuum in this aspect in the State, maybe because of the long-standing history of our nature as a civil service society. Whether, we accept, believe it or not, Akwa Ibomites, I have observed, lack business development skills and techniques. We believe and hope on ready-made business one takes there, set up for people to come in and appear and look like businessmen or women, only to end up, racking the business down.
A project such as the Amakpe refinery, is a type that governments in other countries such as where I am today, pay people to lobby and bring to their countries to establish. Why is that in Akwa Ibom State so different? After following and reading materials I can reach on this issue, I am beginning to see things differently. Is the refinery not to be cited in Akwa Ibom State? Are the promoters not indigenes of Akwa Ibom State? Will Akwa Ibomites, not those that will directly, benefit from that establishment, ranging from employment, services, economic booms, etc?
Why are we wicked to ourselves? Assuming the promoters of the refinery are encouraged or empowered to get the project working, will they repatriate the profits from that refinery back to develop the United States or another country or State? Can't we guess how many millionaires would spring up from that refinery, a source of pride and prestige for our State?
Since Amakpe Oil Refinery has been the first and only of its kind in AKwa Ibom State, the government should do everything possible to see its sustainability, but where if it becomes impossible, then I would advise that, we continue doing what we know best. And God knows what is that?
Both parties in the business cannot be right, neither can they be wrong at the same time. What remains for them to do, is to, apart from applying business ethics and rules to resolve the matter, examine their consciences to assess, how fair they are to the people of Akwa Ibom State and humanity at large. Assuming the project is completed, if someone from your mother's side will not benefit in one way or the other from it, definitely, another from your father's side will do. So says an adage.
Let there be a cease-fire. Money earned stops here on earth, with nothing going with you to the other world.
Let me tell you what happened here in my abode about a decade ago. Sorry to some of my friends I have narrated this story in the past. But I am living with it.
A very rich man, Forbes Magazine celebrate, an elementary six graduate in those days , passed on at the age of 96 not so long ago. He is said to have started life as a kiosk operator but rose to the likes of Bill Gates of today's America. His name was Vehbi Koc. If you google ''Koc Holding'', you will see the financial empire he left behind after his death.
Before the man died, they say, he wrote two letters and kept, one to be opened just before he would be buried and the other, after his burial. His corpse was prepared for burial according to Islamic rites, being a Moslem. Just before that, by the man's will, one of the letters was opened. In the letter, he had requested that, they should bury him with his socks, yes only a pair of socks. And you know, in this part of the world, wills are honored very well. But the Imam, the clergyman who conducted the funeral, raised an objection that, according to Islam, a man goes back to his Creator, the way he came to the world, with nothing on him, except the linen, he or she is wrapped with and lowered into the grave with no coffin. The man was buried without his socks.
When his family members reached home after the burial, the second letter was opened. What was in it this time? Nothing material. The late millionaire only smiled, reminding his children, wife, friends and country people that, if you are opportune to become rich and prosper through hard work more than others, that you should do good, help the poor, the needy, contribute to the growth and the development of your country to make your country strong, that no matter how rich you are, when you die, you take nothing, even a pair of socks to the other world. That was the content of the man's second letter. You see, he lived, worked and died with his belief. In fact, his corpse was stolen from the grave by men of the underworld for ransom. But they were caught and punished seriously with prison terms.
That was a lesson from the late Vehbi Koc, the man I knew very well. He was so rich a man and contributed to his country as much as he could. My life today, has been influenced by such people here in Turkey. Some of these are: Vehbi Koc - businessman, Sakip Sabanci- businessman, Turgut Ozal - one time PM and of course, Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, all, late. I knew the first three, except the last one. There are many things to learn from great people. The day Turgut Ozal died, I fell ill for more than a week. Ataturk founded modern Turkey, Turgut Ozal made the country what it is today before my very eyes here. I don't know if I will ever see something as great as what I have witnessed here in Turkey in my lifetime again. This is why I am having sleepless nights, watching President Goodluck Jonathan.
Tears are running on my cheeks just as I am writing this piece. I am sorry. Why are we wicked to ourselves, our children, our families and to the humanity we belong?

Akpabio donates to PMAN, NOT Christy Igbokwe’s Family

Moses,
“During an earlier visit to the Akwa Ibom State Government by the burial committee, Gov. Godswill Akpabio donated money for the burial”. – Moses Edem
NOTE: It was NOT Christy Essien Igbokwe burial committee that visited Akpabio, it was PMAN and they were NOT representing Christy Essien Igbokwe family.
Your post is nothing but LIEs. Please spare this family your tantrums. Late Chief Igbokwe deceives some respect.
Everybody knows Akpabio is restlessly looking for anything that can blur the weight of crimes he has committed in the state. He wants people to see him in good light while using people like you to commit crimes.
In case you were not properly briefed, Mr. Bisi Olatilo, Onyeka Onwenu, Former PMAN president, Mr. Tony Okoroji paid Godwill Akpabio courtesy visit NOT Igbokwe’s family. I think he presented a cheque of about N10 million (Not sure) to Mr. Tony Okoroji for Christy Essien Igbokwe Endowment Charity Fund.
Off the top of my head, Bisi Olatilo clearly stated that they were NOT representing Late Chief Essien Igbokwe’s family.
ALSO NOTE: whatever money Akpabio donated was not for the late musical ICON’s burial or family. Its for whatever show/project PMAN is planning to arrange in honor of Late Chief Essien Igbokwe and other governors have donated too.
So, finally Akpabio summed up courage to pay the family a visit after how many weeks. Other governors including Fashola of Lagos state did that and has been visiting the family right from when the news broke out. Is he not ashamed of himself that he was in Lagos when the woman passed on, while other governors trooped in to console the family he returned to AKS without even a condolence message on his behalf to the family.
SHAME! SHAME!! SHAME!!! Mr. Godswill Akpabio.

National Secretary of AKISAN Relieved for Attending Global Congress of IPU

Mr. Bassey Okon is an Ibibio man, while Mr. Buffer Eyo (the National President of Akwa Ibom State Association) is an Annang man. Until Mr. Buffer Eyo relieved Mr. Bassey Okon of his position, he (Bassey) has been diligently serving  as the National Secretary of Akwa Ibom State Association. For a long time, it has been in the rumor-mill that Buffer Eyo has always wanted to remove Bassey Okon as the National Secretary of AKISAN, in preference to his Annang kindred, in order to complete Annang hegemony and a grip on Akwa Ibom State Association. Buffer Eyo's appointment of Dr. Jimmy Umoh (of Annang extraction) has confirmed what many already knew. It is interesting that in his letter of dismissal, Buffer Eyo did not state the reason Bassey Okon was dismissed (please see attached). But we know better.

Until the Global Congress of Ibibio People's Union held in Atlanta on August 6, 2011, I never heard of or had any previous contact with---let alone knew---Mr. Bassey Okon. During the Business Meeting of the IPU, someone whispered into my ears that the National Secretary of AKISAN was in the room. Out of respect for the office he held, I gave special recognition for Mr. Bassey Okon to address the Meeting. He did. He was the only official of AKISAN to attend the Global Congress of Ibibio People's Union. After Bassey Okon had completed addressing the IPU Congress, my gut-feeling told me that he would return to Miami as the enemy of Buffer Eyo. My instinct was right!

After the IPU Congress in Atlanta, I received information that Buffer Eyo was very unhappy when he learned that Bassey Okon had attended a meeting of IPU in Atlanta. I never relayed this information to Bassey Okon because I did not want to be dragged into the affairs of AKISAN---an association which I helped shape into a viable organization, but which if I had my way, I would let it die a natural death because of the ethnic cards introduced into the Association by Godswill Akpabio and in which Buffer Eyo had been installed (by Akpabio) as an agent of divide-and-rule and as a promoter of Godswill Akpabio's propaganda mouth-piece in United States.

Before the National Convention in Akwa Ibom State was held in Miami, I had called for all sons and daughters of Ibibio to boycott the Conventionand leave it for Akpabio, Buffer Eyo, and all those who are ready and prepared to play the ethnic sentiments with them. Some members of Ibibio community attended the conference, hoping it will bring understanding which may cement the spirit of brotherhood among all the ethnic groups that comprise Akwa Ibom State. The dismissal of Bassey Okon has revealed that such hopes were being hung on nothingness; Akwa Ibom State Association has been turned into an ethnic play-ground for Godswill Akpabio. The only best alternative is for indigenes of Ibibio to leave AKISAN for Buffer Eyo and Godswill Akpabio.

First, in 2010, with help from the agents of Godswill Akpabio, Mr. Edet Udofia was manipulated out of the Presidency of AKISAN. Next, when Dr. Tom Mbeke-Ekanem and other Ibibio intellectuals submitted articles for publication in Mbuk Akwa Ibom, the articles were rejected under a flimsy and nonsensical excuse that it did not meet “their” standard. Now, they have ganged up against an Ibibio son, who has been relieved of his position as the National Secretary of AKISAN, simply because he attended a meeting of Ibibio People’s Union, an organization which he attended out of his birth-right as a true and bona fide son of the Ibibio.  The question is, how far do the Ibibio have to wait, while a few Annang men, such as Buffer Eyo, are hi-jacking the affairs of Akwa Ibom State Association for their selfish gains and the whims and caprices of a failed leader by the name of Godswill Edward “Obot” Akpabio?

After all, what does Akwa Ibom State Association has to offer the Ibibio people, other than insults and discrimination? For years most of the revenue collected at every annual National Convention has been from contributions made from the sweats of the Ibibio. Yet, all they receive has been a constant insult and abuse. The Ibibio can no longer afford to remain the “stupid majority” in an organization where they are not respected and in which they do not feel dignified. There is so much insult a group can continue to tolerate. Enough should be enough.

We should thank God that the Ibibio has a viable alternative they can turn to, unlike in the past when AKISAN was the only organization left for the Ibibio to join with a feeling of belonging. Since Buffer Eyo is taking membership of Ibibio people in AKISAN for granted, I hereby call on all Ibibio sons and daughters to leave AKISAN and come to Ibibio People’s Union (IPU) ---an organization of the Ibibio, by the Ibibio, and for the Ibibio, where no discrimination can be meted to any member.
